5 Ways to Improve Your At-Home Dental Routine
April 19, 2023 10:25 pmYour home dental hygiene goes a long way in keeping your mouth healthy! Here are five ways to improve your at-home oral healthcare:
- Brush & Floss Every Day
- Choose Helpful Tools
- Regularly Replace Your Toothbrush
- Be Mindful of Acidic Foods & Drinks
- Listen to Music
Only occasionally brushing and flossing will leave you more vulnerable to developing dental disease. Be consistent with your oral hygiene to reduce your risk of bad breath, tooth decay, and gum disease. Brush your teeth morning and night for two minutes each time. Remember to brush your tongue too! Floss at least once a day. If you desire, rinse your mouth with an alcohol-free antibacterial mouthwash.
The right dental tools can make it more likely that you’ll stay consistent with your oral hygiene. For example, an electric toothbrush can make teethbrushing feel like less of a chore. And if using a long piece of string floss is discouraging you from flossing every day, look into floss picks or a water flosser.
Using your toothbrush every day wears its bristles down. A frayed toothbrush is not as effective as a fresh toothbrush at removing plaque and food particles from your teeth and gumline. Replace your manual toothbrush and electric toothbrush head every three months or after you’ve been sick for optimal cleaning power!
Acidic foods and drinks can temporarily soften your tooth enamel. Instead of brushing your teeth immediately after consuming citrus, orange juice, and soda, vigorously rinse your mouth with water and wait at least 30 minutes before you brush your teeth.
Try new ways to make your oral care routine more interesting. For example, put on a song or listen to a short podcast clip when brushing your teeth. Buy a comfortable bathroom mat to pad your feet or sit on an exercise ball.
